"October 23,1858. Packed our things on the
horses - and with scarcely any
provisions, started across the Great
American Desert at noon. Fatigued
& weary, arrived at midnight at unattended mail station - stopped for the night. Cold windy rain storm all night. No water or feed. 25 miles.
October 24,1858
Sunday. In the desert yet.
Cold & very windy, sand
blowing & hailing alternately.
Without anything to eat or drink.
still traveling on
- Horses almost given out - Ae. The
roads perfectly lined with bones of
cattle, horses, and even persons, bleached and white and it has the appearance of an upturned grave yard, this Great American Desert. At Two
O Clock, came in sight of Carson river & Ragtown trading post. Nothing to buy
except fresh beef, 87cts per pound, a little flower at 50cts pound ($100.oo barrel) got a little of each, and cooked a good warm meal - stayed all day and rested ourselves & horses.
made 17 miles" |
